hello kitty macarons

When I saw this post on these adorable lemon-shaped macarons from 6 Bittersweets, I immediately got the idea to make Hello Kitty macarons!  The idea brewed in my head for a while, until I finally had a chance to test the idea out on a couple of macaron shells while making my strawberry-lemonade macarons.

I thought about using cocoa powder to create Hello Kitty's face, but in the end I drew on the eyes, nose, and whiskers with edible "Foodwriter" pens.  And for the bow, I attached heart-shaped sprinkles (glued on with a dab of the filling), just like the bow on my Hello Kitty cake pops.

I loved the end result.  I only wished that I had made more!  Next time, I will make an entire batch of these!

*** Update:
You can now find my recipe for Hello Kitty Macarons in my new book, "The Hello Kitty Baking Book"! Enjoy!

  28. @Andie - i got the recipe from Pierre Herme's "Macaron" book:
    http://www.amazon.com/Macaron-French-Pierre-Herme/dp/B003XNE0ZC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1291882320&sr=8-2
sorry about not posting recipe, i always feel bad posting other people's recipes, but i try to always link to them or point to whatever book i got the recipe from. however when i start creating my own recipes i will definitely post them!

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Andie - oh, also for creating hello kitty, i used a toothpick to pull out the ears (xiaolu's method which she used for the lemons). then i drew on the face with edible foodwriter pens, and then attached heart sprinkles as the bows. and the filling was cream cheese whipped with confectioner's sugar, freshly grated lemon zest, and pureed strawberries. hope that helps!

  30. Wow! These are absolutely adorable macarons! I love your baking. Just discovered your site through the Top9 today, BRAVO! So glad I found it.

  39. @Danae - The Busty Baker - HAHA you just make me laugh out loud picturing someone yelling "OMG' at the computer, especially since that's something i would totally do!

@alice - thank you! i'm in the san francisco bay area, and i do custom orders, so just email me if there's anything you'd like to order!

@kita - you should definitely try making macarons! they are super fun, and they are addicting to make once you start :)

@Jill@MadAboutMacarons - thank you!!! so glad you found my blog!

@Alyssa Vakulchik - for the ears I used Xialu's technique which she used for lemon shaped macarons, where you pull the batter out with a toothpick. If you macaron batter is spreading too much, it might be either too thin or over mixed?

@Bake...Mistake? - sure i'd love to give advice! although i'm a self-taught baker and haven't been blogging very long so i'm not sure i have much advice to offer, but if you have any questions send them my way!

thanks everyone for all your wonderful and encouraging comments!!!
