monogram wedding cookies

My cousin Yvonne got married to her longtime fiance Marvin a few weeks ago (YAY!), and I offered to help out my making wedding cookie favors!  Her wedding color was robin's egg blue, so I made blue and white "Y" and "M" monogram cookies, representing their initials.

As always, I used my favorite homemade sugar cookie and royal icing recipes, but you could of course use store bought..  Since I was making 200 cookies, I ended up making 8 batches of the sugar cookie recipe!  After letting the dough chill in the fridge, I rolled it out and used these Alphabet cookie cutters to cut our my letters.

When all of the cookies were baked (it was late at night by now), I stored them in airtight containers to keep them fresh overnight.  Then the next day I started on my icing.  I made two batches of royal icing, and colored half of it robin's egg blue (I used a combination of Americolor sky blue and teeny bit of lemon yellow), trying as best as I could to match it to the colors on the invitation.  I decided to make the "Y" cookies blue, and the "M" cookies white - by first piping a stiff icing outline around each letter, and then filling it with runny icing.

After the icing had dried (I let it dry overnight), I piped a dotted border around each cookie to finish it off.

Two hundred cookies later, I was done!

Finally, I wrapped the cookies in cellophane bags (one "Y" cookie and one "M" cookie in each bag), and tied them with custom favor tags and raffia.

The wedding turned out beautiful!  The ceremony was lovely, the food was deelish (lobster, filet mignon, cuban rice, and fried plantains!), and the Matthew and Melodie had so much fun dancing all night long.

Congratulations Yvonne and Marvin!  We love you!

whale cookies

A while back, a friend of a friend asked me to make a Hello Kitty cake for a bridal shower she was throwing.  It turned out that I went to highschool with her!  Then it turned out that she has another friend, who I went to highschool with, who was interested in having me make cookie favors for her son's first birthday party!  What a small world!

The party was going to have a whale theme, with the colors of light blue and light green.  So I ended up making light blue whale cookies, as well as light green "M" cookies (for the birthday boy who's name is Maxwell).  I used my favorite homade sugar cookie and royal icing recipes, but you could of course use store bought.  And for the shapes, I used the whale cookie cutter from this animal set, and the "M" cookie cutter from this alphabet set.

To decorate the whales, I first outlined them with stiff blue royal icing, and then filled them in with runny blue royal icing.  After letting them dry overnight, I outlined them again with stuff blue royal icing, and then added an eye with stuff black royal icing.  At that point I thought that I was done with the whales, but still something seemed to be missing.  Ah, the fin!  So I also piped on a little fin on each whale.

For the "M" cookies, I first outlined them with stiff pale green royal icing, filled them in with runny icing, and then let them dry overnight.  She had liked the way I had decorated my flower and letter bridal shower cookies, so I decorated the Ms the same way by piping the small white dots around the perimeters.

After all of the cookies were completely dry, I packaged each one in a cellophane bag tied with raffia and a custom favor tag.

Happy (belated) birthday Max!  Hope you had a wonderful party and enjoyed the cookies!

bridal shower cookies

Two years ago, I made these "H" and "M" cookies (in the picture below) as favors for my friend Helen's bridal shower - "H" for Helen, and "M" for her husband Mike.

I decorated them with yellow and navy royal icing to match the color scheme of their wedding.  Then I wrapped them in cellophane bags, and tied them with raffia and a custom favor tag.

Helen liked the cookies so much that she asked me to make them again for her out-of-town wedding guests and wedding party - she was putting together a welcome package for all of them and wanted to include these cookies.  So I made the cookies again for her out-of-town wedding guests, and slipper (flip-flop) cookies for her wedding party.

Recently, Helen asked me to make cookies again, this time for a bridal shower she was planning for her friend Irene.  She initially wanted "I" and "I" cookies (for Irene and Ivan), but after I saw their wedding website, which had a floral theme, I sent Helen a picture of my flower cookies which I had just made for a friend's daughter's birthday party.  We decided that I would do half of them flower cookies, and half of them "I" cookies, in the bride's color scheme of vintage pink, cream, and yellow.

When the time came to make the cookies, I got out my alphabet cookie cutter set and searched for the "I".  To my dismay, it was not the kind of "I" that had top and bottom lines - instead it just looked like a long, skinny rectangle!  I immediately asked my husband if he could make me a custom "I" cookie cutter.  Lucky for me, he made it (out of a soda can) that same hour!  (Thanks hubby!  You're the best!)

After I finally baked the cookies, I decorated them with pink and cream royal icing, and added my accents - yellow centers for the flowers, and tiny yellow hearts on each "I".

I hope Helen and everyone at the bridal shower liked the cookies!  Congratulations Irene and Ivan!!!
